Amelia
Amelia was a black enslaved woman, cook, and advisor. She is remembered as having participated in the ten-month long Berbice Rebellion of 1763. She “walked around with a broad sword like a man” (Kars, 53). This adoption of male/masculine identity served as a way for her to access power throughout the rebellion.
