Voyant

Voyant vocab cloud 2.png

This is a word cloud made using the Voyant webpage. The terms you are seeing are a result of all of the text taken from the Accessible Archives articles we just examined in the StoryMap. This word cloud is comprised of the main terms used to describe the types of rebellions discussed in the articles. The terms that appear larger are the ones more frequently used within the language of the news clippings. The term that is most frequently used to describe these potential rebellions is "revolt." Unlike the terms rebellion and uprising, this term is a direct threat to the enslavers. It indicates the end of their power.

Although it does acknowledge tacit resistance, it also implies a desire for the collapse or destruction of these oppressors' power. While uprising and rebellion imply a clear goal of recognition or the seeking of change. It also highlights the likely outcome for the enslaved who seeks freedom. Therefore, we see the word “hanged” strikingly displayed prominently.

The Voyant below is an interactive version of the image above. This allows us to see how the value of some terms change due to the way they are oriented within the word cloud. This will also hopefully allow us to see the less frequently used terms such as "insurrection." When looking at these terms in juxtaposition to each other we can see how when formed in the cloud the terms used the least are almost so small within the program that they could almost be overlooked. This lack of frequency used for these terms show the viewer the attempts that have been made to erase their significance.
